Yanchmish (Week 57, Tajikistan)

This recipe is a part of my Global Vegan Challenge where each week I research and develop a recipe from a different country in the world. Many of these recipes are veganized based off their omnivore counterparts. While not all of these recipes are a one for one what you’ll find in their country, I hope you’ll still find them delicious!

Recipe Notes

  • This recipe is super quick and easy, and can be replaced with dried fruit and nuts of your choice. I stuck with raisins and walnuts here since it seemed to be common in this recipe, however you can replace with dates, apricots, pistachios — experiment with your favorites!
  • The recipe below results in a more dried fruit heavy version of this, but if you want a more dense nutty one you may want to consider upping the amount of nuts you use.
  • I use a blender in this recipe, but if you have a food processor you can throw everything in together at once and blend. It’ll help things come together a bit quicker.

Servings

~30 balls

Prep time

30 minutes

Cooking time

no bake

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Walnuts

  • 2 cups Raisins

  • 1/4 cup Powdered Sugar

  • 1 tablespoon Agave

  • 1 tablespoon Breadcrumbs

  • 1/4 tsp Salt

Directions

  • Add walnuts to a blender and pulse until you get a fine crumb. Add to a large bowl.
  • Add raisins to a blender and pulse until you get a paste-like consistency. Add to bowl with walnuts.
  • Add agave and bread crumbs to bowl with walnuts and raisins. Mix well. Once it’s completely mixed sprinkle and fold in salt. You should have a sticky nutty dough (if it’s not sticking well you can slowly add and mix in more agave as needed).
  • Wet hands and tear off pieces of the fruit and nut dough into bite sized pieces (about 2 teaspoons in each ball). Repeat until you run out of dough.
  • Add powdered sugar to a small bowl. Place each balls one by one to the powdered sugar. Toss to coat, then shake off any excess powdered sugar.
  • Once all of the balls have been coated in sugar enjoy immediately or store covered until ready to serve.
