April 10, 1952 : Back to School

So — this blog blew up a bit after sharing with the Donauschwaben groups. Welcome new followers!

I see many of you have signed up to get notified when a new post goes live. For those of you who are new to my blog my primary focus is veganizing global dishes as part of my Global Vegan Challenge, so please know that in addition to getting ‘schwob love letter updates you’ll also be getting updates for my vegan recipes. If you don’t want vegan recipes in your inbox I’m planning on publishing these weekly on Wednesdays so you can always check the Immigration Love Letters page for new posts. Otherwise, you can enjoy all of the tasty vegan recipes I’m posting as bonus content as well. Until then, enjoy the letters! 🙂

As for the above photo, this is an article by the Crestline Advocate that covered my Oma’s family upon their arrival to Crestline. The article is a bit inaccurate to their story, but it’s still a really cool record to have.

Dear Otto,

I’m very happy about your letter that I received when I got out of school. You won’t believe it, but it’s true, I must go to school another year. I don’t like it at all, but I believe it’s better so that when I go somewhere now,  I get paid virtually nothing at all since I’m not yet 18 years old. I’m currently learning to type, english cooking, and going to music school again. Over the holidays I’m going to look for a job. Otherwise I’m well. I also received many clothes and all kinds of things. It makes me happy that you are doing well and are satisfied. My father is also going to work, he makes only $1.14. I believe later it will be more. Let me be so happy as well.

Thousand greetings and kisses,

Your Liesl.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Liesl.
